Draft Six,(Final draft.)
Ali's brother died during the riot between the Sinhalese and Tamils which has been going on for years. Ali is a Tamil, living together with his family for many years in Sri Lanka. Ali and his brother, Jaya, had always been hardworking when it comes to schoolwork and their grades had never let their mother down. Ali and Jaya both had a goal. Their goal was to continue their studies in university and get a good career. However, things had not gone well for the both of them, as well as the other Tamils living in Sri Lanka.
Ali and Jaya had made many good friends in school and in their neighbourhood. They often play wildly together, creating a strong bond between themselves. However, things changed after Sri Lanka got its independence. The government, which was controlled by the Sinhalese, announced that only those who are born in Sri Lanka or whose forefathers were born here would be allowed to live in Sri Lanka. Many felt a pang of panick as they did not know what to do. Ali and Jaya also had to bid farewell to some of their close friends.
"I will never forget you, Salim!" shrieked Ali gaudily as Salim and his family disappear into sight.
Ali then strolled back into his house gloomily, knowing he would not be able to see Salim again. Ali was devasted for days, and what was more depressing was that they even had to stay with Buddhist monks and the Sri Lanka Army which comprised mostly Sinhalese. They were often stared at by the Sinhalese and were bullied by children older than them.
Bunch of Sinhalese children would surround around Ali and Jaya. They would throw rocks at them and call them names. One of the Sinhalese mocked at Ali and Jaya, "Tamils are brainless, so are you."
"Then you think that you Sinhalese are very smart?" said Ali in a sarcastic tone, and as quickly as possible, Ali took Jaya hands and ran off.
Five years had passed; Ali and Jaya had scored well in their results and was able to go to a university. Unfortunately that year, the government introduced new university admission criterias. The Tamil students had to score higher marks than the Sinhalese students to enter the same courses in the universities. A fixed number of places in the university were also reserved for the Sinhalese, admission was no longer based solely on academic results.
Therefore, the number of vacancies in university had been taken up. Ali and Jaya were extremely upset. While walking home that very fine day, they overheard a conversation between two Tamils, talking about Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE), and regarding violence against the Sinhalese.
"Excuse me, I am sorry to interrupted, but I overheard your conversation. What's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE)?" asked Ali, his eyes opened widely, together with Jaya who was also interested in their conversation.
"They are groups of people who fight against the unreasonable Sinhalese," explained one of the Tamil.
"Can we join too?" asked Ali and Jaya excitedly, and they both blinked their wide eyes at the Tamils.
Much unhappiness was caused between the Sinhalese and Tamil. The Tamils felt that the government was being biased towards the Sinhalese. Eventually, Ali and Jaya joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE). They resorted to violence, killing the Sinhalese vigorously. Daily, there were cases reported on the news that more and more Sinhalese had been assassinated by the LTTE. Blood were all over the street and dead bodies were piled on the streets.
Ali's mother was unaware that both Ali and Jaya were involved in the LTTE. Ali and Jaya knew that once they joined the LTTE, it meant a dangerous adventure for them.
"Brother, I want you to remember. No matter what, please, safety comes first. If the Sinhalese are dashing forward with a knife, run as fast as you can, understand? explained Ali. Both of them, together with the rest of the LTTE members, were going to oppose the Sinhalese government now.
"Brother, I will," replied Jaya, nodding his head approvingly.
Soon, blood was oozing out of the Sinhalese and Tamils as the riot started. The government would not grant the Tamils a separate independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. Just then, a Sinhalese, holding a knife on his hand, rushed towards Ali. Ali could hardly notice as the place was very chaotic. Jaya saw the Sinhalese, he ran as fast as he could towards Ali, but it was too late.
"Brother! Open your eyes! Please, I beg you!" pleaded Ali anxiously, shaking Jaya vigorously. Carrying Jaya's body, he ran home as quickly as he could. "Hang on!"cried Ali, as he ran rapidly and weeping deeply, but Ali knew...

Draft One,
Ali's two brother died during the riot between the Sinhalese and Tamil which has been going on for years. Ali is a Tamil, living in Sri Lanka for many years together with his family in the Northern part of Sri Lanka. Previously during the British colonial rule, Ali and his family were leading better lifes then. It was easier to find jobs and school was easier to get in. Ali and his two brothers had worked hard in school, as they wished to get in the university to further their studies. However, there is a twist in their life after Sri Lanka got its independent. The new government was made up of Sinhalese which then favours the Sinhalese more than other enthnic groups.
Ali has many good friends since young. They often play with each other, study together and have been close for many years. There has been a bond between them. However, Ali had to part with some of his friends one day as the government passed the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948, which this act granted citizenship only to those who were either born in Sri Lanka or those whose forefathers were born there. Ali was upset as he could not help his friends. Many Tamils in his neighbourhood felt a pang of panick as they found themselves stateless.
" Don't worry Ali, i will remember the memories we have and i'll never forget you. Help me send my regards to your mother too. I am gald to have you as a friend, " said Ali's friend, Kumar, who is almost tearing when he bid farewell to Ali.
"I will never forget the friendship between us, i will never forget the times when we are together playing since young. " cried Ali, who could no longer hold back his tears.
Ali was devasted for days, and what made his life worse is that the government helped the Sinhalese by resettling of poor Sinhalese peasants. Sinhalese peasants were transferred form the densely populated southwesten and central areas to Tamil areas, which Ali and his fellow friends had to stayed not only with Sinhalese, but also buddhist monks and the Sri Lanka Army which comprised mostly Sinhalese.
"Why the government has to be so unfair, " complained Ali to his mother.
"Stop complaining, life will not be better this way too," replied Ali's mother.
Ali and his brothers feels uneasy around the Sinhalese as whenever they are playing, they were often stared by the Sinhalese and bullied by them occasionally as most of the Sinhalese are staying around their area. Ali and his brothers were helpless and could not do anything then. During the year 1956, Ali and his brothers grew older too. Though they are still studying, they tried to find a job to help out in household expenses which their ageing mother is coping alone. But, during the year 1956, Sinhala was declared as the country's official language under the Official Language Act. Tamils in the government service were given three years to learn Sinhala or be dismissed.
"How are we able to learn Sinhala in 3years?" said Ali to his brothers.
"We will not be able to find a job anymore, how could we help mother?" said his brother, sighing away.
Ali and his brothers were helpless, they could not do anything at all, but to study hard and hopefully to get jobs once they finish their university. They then study really hard, and they really scored well enough to get into university. However, the government introduced new university admission citertia. Tamil students had to score higher marks than the Sinhalese students to enter the same courses in the universities. A fixed number of places in the university were also reserved for the Sinhalese, admission was no longer based soely on the academic results. Hence, Ali and his brothers were upset upon hearing the news.
Ali told his brothers, " there is nothing we can do now, we could only go out and find job and give up the idea on getting into the university. " His brothers nod their head to agree with Ali.
Days goes by, time has not been better. Ali and his fellow Tamils friends felt that they have been discriminated by the Sinhalese and the government and decide to approach the government for better change. Then, in the early 1950s, one of the Tamil political parties approached the government that the Tamil areas be recognised as a federation within the country. But in 1976, when their demands were still not met, a new political party called the Tamil United Liberation Front emerged, Ali and his brothers were involved too.
They then asked for a separate indepedent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka, and wanted it to be called Tamil Eelam as they believed that only separation from Sri Lanka would ensure their rights. However, their idea were rejected. Ali, together with other Tamils were very dissatisfied and angry. Ali and the Tamil United Liberation Front had been resorted to violence towards the Sinhalese, and as a result, it caused many innocent death. Worse of all, Ali's two brother were killed by the Sinhalese too. Since then, Ali had deep hatred towards the Sinhalese too.

This career basically is to be able to communicate with strangers and be able to promote products and try ways to make them interested in it. I also have to face challenges of globalisation in order to be exposed to entrepreneurial skills. If I am able to score well for my O levels, I will be able to take up the course 'Business Management' which is a nearer step to my goals. Nan yang Polytechnic had been my dream Polytechnic as it has the courses that concerns business. Over there, Students are given a solid foundation in the key business modules in the first two years, and specialised subjects in the second and final year of study. I'm very inspired by the course there and will be working harder towards my goal.
Lastly, I understand that a business woman have to interact well with her clients, but I am not really a good-talker and often feels shy when projecting my voice and presenting to crowds. Even for my oral examinations, my heart would beat very quickly and I would start to feel very nervous. I have a part-time job which is from Star hub Company. Doing door to door sales, I have to interact with every house respondents and persuade them to buy our stuffs. I think this would help me to be better while communicating with strangers and persuade them to buy stuffs. Hopefully I will be able to score well for my O levels and get into my dream polytechnic.

How I spent my Chinese New Year 2009.
'Mooooooo!' It's finally Chinese 'Niu' year! (Year of the Ox.) This means more pocket money for me! Every New Year does not seem to excite me as each year it is the same old thing happening. This year, Chinese New Year falls on 26 January 2009, which everyone would gather together, visiting each other houses to 'Bai Nian'. Somehow, this year was slightly different, as it happens to fall on a Monday, which we only had two days to rest. It was kind of a slight rush this year, and Singapore wasn't really as enthusiastic as compared to few years back.
Every year, on the first day of New Year, my family and I would dress up nicely, 'Bai Nian' with my parents first(Mum always give the biggest Ang Bao of all.), then head to have our breakfast outside. Despite New Year, there were still a few coffee shop open but prices increases. (Trying to earn our money!)Then, we will head to Marina to crowd into the New Year atmosphere there. But this year, it was closed; hence we headed home for a nap before going out to visit my parent's friends at night. 'Chik Ching', more 'Ang Bao' into my pockets too! And, what's more is the New Year goodies especially the 'Gua Zi' (Melon seeds,) which almost everyone loves to eat. (After I say this, Ms Cho says she don't like to eat as will stuck onto her teeth, *laugh.*)
And of course the most excited of all.. GAMBLING! 'Ban Luck'(Blackjack)! Which everyone would gather around in a circle, trying to get double aces. Aces with a king, queen or jack or perhaps the most powerful card, triple seven which the 'Chen Gae' (Banker) would have to pay the person seven times of his/her money. It will be the noisiest game of all as everyone would shout 'Picture'! (Jack, King or Queen Card) hoping that the Banker would lose and have to pay us the money.
We also went to gave offerings to our ancestors at the alter, wishing my 'Ah ma'(Grandmother), 'Ah gong'(Grandfather) happy new year too. Anyway, how I wish they were still on Earth, then I can celebrate New Year with them too! (Perhaps main motive is see them and more Ang Pao money :x). We also did the traditional "Lao Yu Sheng' which we had to use the chopsticks to toss the 'Yu Sheng' very high to 'HUAT AHHHHHHHHH'!
Lastly, this year we went over to my 'Po po' house for Lunch. 'Po po' is from my mother's side, while this year they didn't play Blackjack but Mahjong instead. I didn't play, didn't know how to play. Keep accumulating food in my stomach and watched television programmes which is specially shown on Chinese New Year. Wanted to go over to my previous Boss house to BaiNain, (still, main motive is the Ang Pao, HAHAHAH.), but didn't have the time to. Then finally, we headed to father's side relative house. The moment we step into the house, noise and chatterings almost filled the whole room. It was like a gambling den too. Blackjack outside, Mahjong inside, then everyone would shout 'HUAT AH', 'BAN LUK JI KI' (Blackjack please!), didn't win nor lose. And, during that, my cousins kept on shouting, 'WHERE IS THE BANANA!?' which they refers to the 'Banana Chips' they bought, AHAHAHAH. I also went to my friend's place to 'Bai Nian' with his family and he invited few friends over to gamble too! And, I guess, New year is a time when everyone could gather together, leaving out work, school, and see how much a person have changed throughout year, communicate and socialize again.
Despite all the happy times for us during Chinese New Year, however, there are few people who could not celebrate Chinese New Year with their family. Perhaps it's broken family nor they had lost all their love ones. Hence, we should appreciate what we have and be happy everyday! Once again, HAPPY NIUUUUUUUUUUUU YEARRRRRRR!
